(( Update on Jan 31 2009: Hello Facebook “Keep Your Laws Off My Guns” group members. This page is almost 18 months old. Please look at the new list of states which have adopted Castle Doctrine laws — the new page is here. ))
As promised last week, here it is, the map of which US states have adopted the Castle Doctrine so far:
(I stole this map from a great page maintained by Michael Gastner, Cosma Shalizi, and Mark Newman at the University of Michigan. The authors have several different representations and projections of voting power vs. population and number of electoral votes across the US- all in all pretty interesting, and good fodder for the argument about when and how to revise the electoral college. Thanks for the map, guys- sorry about that football game.)
So I don’t think this comparison is really conclusive in any way, since the Castle Doctrine shakeout isn’t really complete. Most of the states which have adopted the law are traditional “red states” as identified in 2000 and 2004. But Maine has flipped, and so has Michigan. Like I wrote last week, I’d be shocked if Oregon doesn’t soon follow suit.
