The Ohio Democrat said his resolution calling for Cheney’s impeachment now has eight co-sponsors. Kucinich appeared with Reps. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., and Al Wynn, D-Md., Wednesday at a press conference announcing the stepped-up efforts.
Fifteen state Democratic parties and 11 state legislatures have passed resolutions calling for President Bush or Cheney to be impeached, according to pro-impeachment Web site AfterDowningStreet.org.
Waters addition as co-sponsor of Kucinich’s measure comes after she voiced support for Cheney’s removal last month. Waters has advocated impeachment for Bush and Cheney since at least summer 2005, AfterDowningStreet notes.
And this is without any support from Henry Waxman, who drafted articles of impeachment in 2005 but was prevented from bringing them to the floor by the Republican house leadership.
Now Rep. Waxman is taking care to toe the line drawn by Speaker Pelosi, so he’s not one of the co-sponsors. But Waxman has already used his chairman’s seat to focus the public eye on several examples of coordinated illegal behavior that have obvious roots in the Executive branch, including gaming elections, applying political pressure to DOJ hire/fire decisions and prosecutions, and treason. The run-of-the-mill Abramoff corruption pales in comparison to the wholesale perversion of democracy that this administration has attempted for the last six years.
As the committees chaired by Waxman in the House and Pat Leahy in the Senate continue to issue more subpoenas for documents and testimony, and as the White House continues to ignore or defy those supboenas, it seems to me that very soon now, impeachment will be the only option left.
So once you count folks like Rep. Waxman, who clearly want to remove this Administration but who already have other irons in the fire, support for impeaching Cheney in the House is well into the double digits. Even if Kucinich succeeds only in pushing the Overton window far enough to make impeachment part of the national debate, it might be enough for Waxman to make it a reality.
